Santa Margherita program of "carbon neutrality"

The alarm of the scientists of the IPCC on climate change due to greenhouse gases and global-warming to find an answer in the first carbon-neutrality policy initiated by Santa Margherita for its wine icon: the Pinot Grigio.

Santa Margherita annuncia a Vinitaly the realization of the broader program certificate “carbon neutrality"Never accomplished by an Italian Cantina: from April, all bottles of Pinot Grigio distributed in Canada - almost 1,5 million bottles a year - are certified carbon neutral, Thanks to the analysis of a foreign institution of high reputation (Carbonzero). All CO2 emissions have been "cleared" through direct intervention in the cycle of production and real reductions in emissions of compensation, attraverso carbon-offsets.

SSI is started from the calculation of the carbon cycle production of Pinot Grigio to Canada, both as an absolute value or as "impact" of each bottle. This calculation was carried out and certified using the Life Cycle Analysis that measures the amount of CO2 released into the atmosphere. Were then identified possible actions to be implemented immediately to reduce and manage, finally, have been shown offsets purchased for that part of the CO2 emissions that can not be abated within the business cycle.

This process leads to "carbon neutrality" or to a carbon footprint equal to zero, totally avoiding the 1, 67 kilograms CO2 are produced for every bottle of Pinot Grigio to Canada. By way of example: produce one kilogram of sugar into the atmosphere by means 1,31 pounds of CO2 and the carbon footprint of a passenger train on the route Venice-Rome is equal to 17 pounds of CO2.

"Already this - says Ettore Nicoletto, Chief Executive Officer of Santa Margherita Group Vinicolo - saw us in a good position to deal with the complex of emission reductions. This is not an operation of "green-washing": we start from Canada, but the goal is to export all over the world this way to produce wine, Also on the domestic market ".

The carbon-offsets purchased from Santa Margherita to immediately compensate the CO2 emissions are not directly folding (transport and distribution, essentially) specifically affect the quality of life and the reduction of emissions in Canada through three strategic interventions:

-> Niagara Landfill Gas to Energy Project: This project collects, captures and recovers exhaust gases originated in Niagara, in six different landfills and transforms them into a source of fuel for a nearby industry recycled paper;

-> Food Waste Valorization Project: made by a leading manufacturer of canned and frozen vegetables in Canada,This design avoids methane emissions enhancing the organic residues and turning them into nutritional products for animals;

-> Bison Transport Fuel Efficiency Project: is involved in more comprehensive strategy of reducing fuel consumption by Bison Transport with the aim of reducing emissions resulting from the transport of products. The transport is a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions in Canada: the 28% of the total in 2011.

During the launch promotion Santa Margherita donate 50 cent of the proceeds from the sale of each bottle of Pinot Grigio Tree Canada, Association who will plant trees in the schoolyard, along the streets and in the parks.
