ANTONIO JOLI BETWEEN NAPLES, ROME AND MADRID

Thursday 14 June at 12, Historical Apartments in the Royal Palace opens the exhibition dedicated to Antonio Joli (Modena 1700 that. – Naples 1777), organized by the Superintendent in collaboration with Civita. The exhibition reconstructs thirty works through the period of maturity of the painter from Modena, one of its business Madrid (1749-1754) and subsequently, more detail, that from 1759 up to 1777 at the Bourbon court Neapolitan. The course set up in the Hall of Bodyguards and retrostanze, It is divided into 4 sections: the views Spain, the views of Naples and surroundings, the scenery and views of Rome.
The views Spanish Comprising three views of Madrid and Aranjuez with a view of the fleet of Tajo, illustrated in detail in the autograph manuscript of Farinelli kept at the National Library in Madrid (another copy of the manuscript, less valuable is preserved at the College of Spain in Bologna). The fleet was probably conceived by Joli and a confirmation of this hypothesis is the fact that in 1740, during his Venetian period (1732-1746), He drew four boats for the regatta on the Grand Canal in honor of Prince Frederick Christian of Saxony.
The views of Naples and surrounding Comprising works held either at the Palace vanvitellian is at the Museum of San Martino. Among these: the painting of The inauguration Waterfall Park, event organized on the occasion of the wedding of Ferdinand IV and Queen Maria Carolina in May 1768 and the fabric with l’ Interior of the Temple of Poseidon at Paestum, realized in 1759, after the painter had personally visited the ancient city to admire the vestiges. Exposed on display also a painting of the’ Arch of Trajan in Benevento, pendant result of a canvas, the same subject, recently acquired by the Prado museum in Madrid.
And the sets’ the most innovative section, consists of paintings preserved in Caserta, one of which can definitely reconnect to the scenery at Alessandro Indies work already performed at the Teatro San Giovanni Crisostomo Venice during Carnival 1738 and revived in the show's 29 May 1768 at the San Carlo in Naples. Of this section is an integral part, even at a distance, the visit of the Court Theatre where it is documented that the Joli realized some scenes of operas.
The views of Rome In this section, the paintings will be exhibited at the Royal Palace, compared with works by Michele Marieschi (1710- 1743) from the Museum of Naples Filangieri and Bernardo Bellotto (1722-1780) the Museum of Asolo, works which relate to both the formation of the artist is the subject Romans exposed. Among the paintings Caserta stands out a splendid view of the Tiber with the Castel Sant'Angelo and San Pietro and a View of the Piazza del Popolo in which the Joli produces different versions, it is a subject particularly pleasing to the Grand Tour. But the painter looked all'urbs as Roman ancient city, symbol of the classical world. This was the idea underlying the creation of the different versions of the vaccine and field landscape with ruins paintings, in which the painter operates in between whim and view. In carrying out this theme the Joli could not overlook the distinguished work of the Venetian Giovanni Battista Piranesi, whose engravings represent, for the most part, its monuments of ancient Rome.
A substantial introduction to the exhibition is in the hall of the Guards of the body where it will be placed a View of Gaspar Van Wittel (Luigi Vanvitelli in a letter to his brother Urbano finds a strong affinity between the views of Joli and those of his father) flanked by two large paintings documenting the Joli, by sea and by land, the departure of Charles for Spain. In the same room of Bodyguards the great painting by Giovanni Paolo Pannini (1691-1795), master of Joli during the Roman period, portraying Charles of Bourbon visit the Basilica of St. Peter, now in the Museo di Capodimonte, It will be compared with the one made by Joli – Arrival at the Quirinale Palace Alvise Mocenigo – from Venice.
Finally on display two views of Naples Portici, large one of which the property of Intesasanpaolo.
