Imago Mundi-The Art of Humanity

Imago Mundi, the global art project sponsored by Luciano Benetton and Benetton Foundation, has taken this evocative metaphor recovered from the Nigerian writer Chinua Achebe, collecting 13 collections of contemporary art 16 African countries.
The result is an unprecedented, rich and fascinating visual story created exclusively by African artists, and young discoveries: a contribution to the debate on aesthetics African, overcoming prejudices and stereotypes, represent the ethnic diversity, social, geography and culture of an entire continent. The collections of contemporary Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gambia, Kenya, Morocco, Mauritania, Mozambique, Senegal, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan, Tanzania, Tunisia, Zanzibar, Zimbabwe - more than 2.000 works 10×12 inches, grouped under the title The Art of Humanity - are on display in Rome, from 20 November 2014 January 11 2015, at Museo Carlo Bilotti (Villa Borghese's Orangery), in collaboration with Roma Capitale, Department of Culture, Creativity and Artistic Promotion - Superintendence of Cultural Heritage Capitolina, and the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. "This exhibition is a journey to a continent young and old, whose art - hybrid, Hybrid, intense - it can be a driving force for the development of African communities and an urgent request to refresh the Western aesthetic ", says Luciano Benetton.
The exhibition in Rome, sum of styles, enzymes, items, stories, production of the various African countries, represents a new stage of the project Imago Mundi, which aims to involve 100 Countries within the 2015. The main objective is to build and lead in the future a visual map of human cultures, promoting artists through catalogs, platform www.imagomundiart.com, and participation in events and exhibitions, in collaboration with public and private organizations, such as the Venice Biennale, in 2013, la Dak’Art OFF, Senegal and the Museum House of Carrara in Treviso in 2014. Up to 25 January 2015 Imago Mundi will be present with an exhibition at the New Orleans NOMA (Louisiana, U.S.) and early 2015, will be at the Winter Palace – Belvedere Museum in Vienna.
