“In Photography” Ugo Mulas

Brescia dedicated to the great photographer Ugo Mulas, then Pozzolengo nel 1928, an important tribute, which is also a reflection on his indispensable work of synthesis, Photography (Einaudi 1973).
Promoted by the Municipality of Brescia and organized by Foundation Brescia Musei, The exhibition which opens on 16 April in the beautiful complex of Santa Giulia Museum, Unesco heritage, is the result of a share of intent with the Archives Ugo Mulas – in people and Valentina Melina Mulas – that with the courtesy of Galleria Lia Rumma accepted the invitation of the city and the photographer Renato Corsini to participate in this project.
Added value of this opportunity Brescia, curating careful and critical of Jean-François Chevrier, historian of art and photography, docente upper all'Ecole National Fine Arts di Parigi, author of numerous publications and curator of important exhibitions.
The path built by Chevrier through a rich selection of photographs from those that the same Mulas had chosen to play in the 1973, brings together the three main areas in which it expressed its work: reportages about art and artists, investigations documentary on the urban environment and, finally, analysis of the constituents of the photographic process.
The photographs that relate to the first area show that Ugo Mulas has been a great observer and interpreter of the news appeared in the art world in Italy and the United States during the '60s. His book on the "New York art scene" (New York: The New Art Scene, 1967), evidence that an artistic reportage can also be the result of the work of an art critic. His portraits of artists, often intent on their work, and studio interiors feature characters and works, some, but also document the attitudes and behaviors.
Bresciano Milanese by birth but by adoption, Mulas conceived his work as a photographer as a learning process – applied in particular to the area and lived in the urban context – in the course of which he always kept art-related knowledge and, experimentation and experience.
This approach is recognizable in the entire corpus of his work, and what so ever evident in the methodical study - which combines images and texts - that he reserved the transaction photo.
